Heritage Council Award for Museum

On Tuesday June 8^th last the Museum was one of five institutions to be accorded the status of interim accreditation under the Heritage Council’s Museums’ Standards Programme for Ireland. The scheme seeks to raise the standards of operation throughout the country’s museums and galleries covering areas as diverse as cataloguing, care of collection, visitor care and policy development. The programme comprises 34 standards, all of which ought to be realised in a 5-year period. In attaining the interim certification, the Museum has achieved the required standard in 25 areas of operation. (This includes collection and disposal policy, collection management and care, as well as the provision of visitor services.)

According to Museum Curator Brian Walsh, the “award is due recognition for the professionalism, enthusiasm and pride that characterises the work in front of and behind the scenes.” He said that “it's a proud day for all of us here at the Museum. An awful lot of unseen effort goes into the work of the Museum safeguarding the collection for future generations. In achieving interim accreditation the work of the many people who have preceded us here is being acknowledged.”
